What we do

Monetary policy is our main responsibility. The RBA Board makes policy decisions that aim to achieve low and stable inflation. Stability of the financial system and the safety and efficiency of the payments system are also a high priority.

We actively participate in financial markets, manage foreign reserves, issue currency notes, and provide select banking and registry services to Government agencies, overseas banks and institutions.

Our assets which include Australia's holdings of gold and foreign exchange, amounted to around $A85 billion at 30 June 2005.

Our role and functions are underpinned by various pieces of legislation. We are a statutory authority, wholly owned by the Australian Government.

We provide information including statistics - for example, on interest rates, exchange rates and money and credit growth - and a range of publications on our operations and research.
