Photograph of Alex I was a cadet at the Bank over the summer of 1990/91, which provided me with an invaluable opportunity to experience the working environment and to learn skills that helped me with my honours thesis. On completing honours, I started work in Economic Research Department. The projects that I worked on enabled me to use the analytical skills I had learned during my undergraduate degree and contribute to the macroeconomic policy process within the Bank. After two years I moved to the balance of payments area of Economic Analysis Department.

While I continued to learn and be challenged by the work I was doing I felt that I would benefit from further academic training. I applied for, and was awarded, funding from the Bank to complete a Masters degree at the London School of Economics. While I was in London I took the opportunity to continue my studies to do a PhD. Since returning from London I have worked in both the Economic Research and Economic Analysis Departments, and taken a year of parental leave. I am currently responsible for the prices, wages and labour market section in Economic Analysis Department.

During my time at the Bank, I have found that work is constantly challenging and that the quality of the staff ensures that the work environment is stimulating. I have had a large variety of working experiences ranging from longer-term research projects to shorter-term analysis and forecasting and management responsibility, all of which have enhanced my ability to contribute to the active internal debate on macroeconomic policy.
